Boston High School's First Online Magazine!

17th December 2010

Students from Boston High School are proud to release their very first online magazine! This has come at a great time with the launch of the new school website happening earlier in the term.

The magazine has been written and designed by the Boston High Newsroom, who are members of the Lincolnshire Young Journalist Academy. Inside the magazine, you will find all the latest news from Boston High School and the local area. You will also be able to read reports, watch films and listen to audio - all created by our students!

The newsletter can be accessed by clicking the thumbnail on the right, or by using the newsletter link at the left hand side of the website.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your continued support of the pupils, staff and the school - and wish you all a very happy and peaceful Christmas and New Year. We look forward to seeing pupils back in school on Wednesday 5th January.

Annual Christmas Concert

17th December 2010

The annual Christmas Concert was held on Thursday 9th December 2010 and proved to be more successful than ever.  Fantastic performances from both the orchestra and the choir, as well as outstanding solo and ensemble items from samba group ‘Off-beat’, a vocal solo by Chloe Mercer, and a festive brass duet to name but a few, celebrated the musical talents within the school.  The evening was enjoyed by all, topped off by the mulled wine and mince pie refreshments.

Year 7 Christmas Party

15th December 2010

The traditional Year 7 party took place on Friday 10th December.  This year the Sixth Form organisers went up-market and the event followed a ‘winter ball’ theme!

We had quite a time identifying some of the year 7 students who looked very glamorous, and had obviously gone to a lot of trouble with their outfits.

Congratulations go to the Sixth Form for their organisational skills.  A good time was had by all as the students were entertained throughout the evening and enjoyed some festive food prepared by the Sixth Form students.

GCSE Photography Coursework

14th December 2010

The GCSE Photography students in Year 11 and 12 have been working hard to create their final piece for their first coursework project. Their starting point was ‘Overhead and Underneath’. They have all explored this title in different ways to create very individual outcomes.

Year 10 Geography Visit to Aviation Heritage Sites

14th December 2010

On December 13th, 40 of our students taking GCSE Geography in year 10 visited two Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage sites at RAF Digby and at East Kirkby. Our students are taking part in an Educational Business Partnership Challenge to plan a three day (two night) holiday visit to Lincolnshire for a family (two adults two children) with the theme of Aviation Heritage.
The aims of this project are

1. To understand Lincolnshire’s Aviation history and how it has impacted on the people involved.
2. To understand how military history and current RAF activities can provide families with an enjoyable and informative holiday.
3. To demonstrate improved communication and presentation skills.

Students will need to produce a 10 minute presentation during which they  specify reasons for their choices and the benefits to the family of their visit.

On our visit we saw the control room at Digby which is a restored fighter Command Sector Operations Room in its original 1937 bunker, where flights were plotted on a large map table. At the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre at East Kirby, we saw several planes including a Lancaster bomber, the Control Tower and a wide range of other artefacts from the war. Our focus as Geography students is of course on the promotion and impact of tourism.

Health & Social Care Students Visit Primary School

8th December 2010

Congratulations to three of our students for planning and carrying out a successful health promotion presentation at a local primary school as part of their health and social care studies.  Their theme was healthy eating and the year 4 and 5 pupils thoroughly enjoyed their visit. The primary school children were engaged in activities which included designing a healthy eating plate, a hand drawing and games and bingo.

Creative Sports Challenge

8th December 2010

Fourteen of our year 8 pupils are taking part in a Creative Sports Challenge competition which aims to plan, design and model an Olympic standard swimming pool for Boston.

Mr Ian Scrimshaw, Senior Planning Engineer and STEM Ambassador, visited the school and took part in a meeting on 3rd December to help guide pupils through the process and answer any questions. The group were well organised and had made excellent progress, posing some very difficult questions as to the planning and structures of similar buildings. The three Directors - Paige, Jordan, and Iestyn are now ready to set final deadlines and ensure each group is on task.

3rd December 2010

Here are a few photos taken this morning showing the recent weather at Boston High School. Despite the severe weather conditions in Lincolnshire, Boston has remained relatively unscathed – allowing us to stay open throughout the week.

Young Enterprise @ Boston Business Awards

1st December 2010

Our highly successfully Young Enterprise Company Elite Enterprise were recently invited to be guest speakers at the Boston Business Awards 2010 evening. This gave them the chance to meet and become acquainted with successful business men and women in Boston and to let them know how the Young Enterprise Scheme has been a key influence in building the aspirations of many young people like them for a bright future ahead.

Below is an article, written by Payal Odedra detailing the success of Elite Enterprise.

About Our Company
Our company name is Elite Enterprise and our product is the Octo-pet, a novelty item, customisable and personalised to create your ideal companion. Each Octo-pet is handcrafted by us, manufactured from sustainably sourced yarn and comes with a birth certificate.

About Us & Our Experience
The team has nine members. Using the skills of our marketing director we turned a simple idea into a profitable business venture as part of the Young Enterprise scheme.

During the company year, we held board meetings which all directors attended twice a week. As well as having an innovative product, we feel we have an innovative and enterprising way of working and managing our company. We always aimed high and whenever we encountered a task or a problem we worked as hard as we possibly could to try and make the most out of it and created a learning experience that has benefited us to date. Alongside this, we strove to be efficient and as productive as possible and would rarely pass up on any opportunity.

Our passion and hard work was reflected throughout the year, especially at Brooksby Melton College where we won the European Challenge beating off competition from nine other East Midlands companies. Our prize took us on a fully expenses paid trip to Lisbon in Portugal in March 2010 to take part in the JA/YE Europe Trade Fair.

As a business we have progressed to sell our product at a shop in Sleaford and at Butlins, a holiday centre in Skegness during the summer holidays. We also had an interview with Melvyn Prior on BBC Radio Lincolnshire regarding our experience.

Currently, apart from ongoing selling opportunities, we have been involved in giving presentations on various aspects of the Company programme during Young Enterprise workshops/events.

Taster Day for Prospective Sixth Form Students

1st December 2010

Following on from our Open Evening for students considering entering the Sixth Form in September, we will be running a Taster Day for external students on Friday 3rd December.  The day will give prospective students the opportunity to attend AS lessons with current year 12 students.  They will also be able to ‘sample’ the facilities on offer to our Sixth Form and have the chance to attend a question and answer session with staff and students.  Hopefully the day will give students an insight into what AS levels are really like, and what they might be doing in a year’s time!
